The 2019 Exhibition of Annual of Contemporary Art of China is curated by Peking University Professor Zhu Qingsheng, showcasing the works of 107 artists. 28 original artworks were physically exhibited at the Shenzhen Pingshan Art Museum, designed by Vector Architects. Spanning over three levels of exhibition spaces, the continuity of spatial experience, realizing the conversation of space and art, were the core design challenge.

The Annual of Contemporary Art of China is a documentation and curation of the art events that have happened within the year. It is an objective, rich and seamless record. Our design seeks to reflect these qualities through the design of space and choice of material. We used a combination of curved forms and translucent fabric to soften the boundaries between spaces and the artworks, while openings on walls created more visual connections, enriching the relationship between the viewers and the artworks. The neutral white textures also resonate with the objectivity and inclusivity of the exhibition. Contrasts between dark and light, expansive and constricting spaces correspond to the different natures of the themes in the exhibition. The play of translucent fabric and opaque wall creates the sense of extension and adds richness to the space. Openings on walls not only frame artworks for specific views but also spatially extend adjacent spaces, guiding the visitors forward.
