"Small Courtyard" is a condensed "micro-exhibition" and space installation. It is named after the vernacular building "Siheyuan" in Beijing. The space is situated on the most prosperous Dongsi South Street in the inner city of Beijing. This space located in the gap of the city is only 4m². It used to be a small sock shop, but now it has become a miniature art exhibition space for the surrounding community, carrying people's rich public life. In this special location, through images and the space itself, we present the dynamic changes happening during the renewal of the old part of the city, its past history, and the ongoing construction process.

In the exhibition, we focus on the neighborhoods and life in the old city of Beijing, which is being renewed, in order to arouse ordinary people's thinking about the city. We visited a series of hutong blocks in East and West part of the old Beijing that are undergoing renewal, where the old residents have just left, and the courtyards still hold traces and warmth of life. We try to record these moments when the old and the new meet, contemplate the afterimages of the spaces that once carried life in the courtyards.
